Task 2

Lesson:
This lesson looked at the concepts of a Utopian and Dystopian world. Students brainstormed aspects and systems that attribute to either worlds e.g economy, nutrition, social hierarchy, health, poverty/wealth, geographical locations.

NARRATIVE

Introduction
A society of Elves belonging to the nation of Sin’dorei, one of the oldest and most power ancestral lineages. The Elves of Sin’dorei who use Arcane Magic –  a celestial energy that is both chaotic and ethereal in nature. It is a substance in the gas phase of mana. Mana is an element found – equivalent to that of water, in all forms of life – ‘The Spirit Of Life’.  Arcane magic seeks to control the elements of fire, water, earth and air.

Chapter One
The narrative begins with a powerful renowned Archmage of the Sin’dorei nation. He divides his time between inventing new spells and training his young apprentice Aaralin – an intelligent, seldom clumsy and carefree 17 year old mage.

The Archmage seeks out an ingredient – a plant called ‘Mageroyal’  across the river where it grows abundantly under the watchful eye dimwitted orges. The Ogres use this plant for many of their shaman rituals, however the Archmage needs it to finalise his new spell – one that is capable of manipulating time.

Chapter Two
The Archmage secrecies his travels across the river that divides the races. It is forbidden to cross the borders, however he is unaware that his apprentice has followed him.

The Archmage is captured by ogres. Running out of mana, the archmage failed to protect himself when he was caught by Ogres, which regretfully led to his death. The Ogres gain extraordinary strength after feasting on the Archmage’s body and in their arrogance declare war against the Elves and threaten to destroy their race and claim their lands as their own.

Aaralin overhears this all, engages in a small and brief battle with Ogre’s in her attempt to escape and realises later she barely did.

The event begins a catalyst of the war between the Elven society and The Orge’s.

Aaralin wants to do 3 things:

  1. Avenge the Archmage’s death.
  2. Take revenge on all Orge’s.
  3. Protect her land and nation.

The apprentice gathers as many followers as she can, uniting them in the cause and preparing them for the battle of a 4th war.

NAME

Students were asked to find a word that fit their Utopian or Dystopian narrative and to create or modify an existing typeface to use for their word. In addition to create a symbol, logo or brand for the narrative.

It was suggested to use Illustrator and create symbols and word in black in white before applying colour.

In regards to the typeface I already had a vision in my mind of what I was after.
I wanted something with an Elvish style but also something that looked runic to bring emphasis on the mythological aspects of my narrative.

When designing my symbol I was unsure of what I wanted it to represent i.e ; ‘arcane magic’ or a ‘Elven sigil’ to represent their race.
In the end I decided on something that accommodated the two. The outer symbol is a representation of the Elven culture and the inner symbol is a representation of arcane power e.g arcane crystals.
